Getting a driving licence takes several steps, and many people wonder what the rules really are. Here we go through the whole way, from applying for a learner's permit to the day your licence arrives in the post.

1. Apply for a learner's permit

Before you can practise driving, you need a learner's permit (körkortstillstånd) from the Swedish Transport Agency. You apply online with BankID. You need a valid photo and, if you have a vision defect, an eyesight certificate from an optician or eye doctor.

It normally takes one to three weeks, sometimes longer, so apply well before you plan your first lesson. If you have had a licence revoked before, it can take longer.

2. Book a first lesson and make a plan

When you have the permit, you can start practising. A good start is a trial lesson where the instructor sees where you are. Then you make a plan together: how many lessons you will probably need, when to book the risk courses and how to study the theory.

3. Practise driving and theory side by side

The most common mistake is to leave the theory until the end. Theory and driving belong together. Much of what you read only makes sense once you sit behind the wheel. Aim to study a little every week instead of doing it all at once.

  • 75-minute driving lessons, ideally spread evenly over the weeks.
  • Theory in the app or on a computer, with practice exams to check your progress.
  • Private practice on top, if you have a supervisor.

4. Do Risk 1

Risk 1 is 180 minutes at the driving school and covers risky behaviour, alcohol, drugs, tiredness and responsibility. The course is mandatory and is registered with the Swedish Transport Agency. Read more about Risk 1.

5. Do Risk 2 on the skid track

Risk 2 is 240 minutes on a skid track, in the Gothenburg area usually Stora Holm. You practise handling the car when it loses grip. Book it when you and your instructor think you are ready, often some way into your training. See Risk 2.

6. Theory test and driving test

Before the driving test, you must pass the theory test. You take it at Trafikverket (the Swedish Transport Administration) and book it through their services. After that, you book the driving test. Many students book a warm-up lesson in the school's car on the day of the test.

Note that you pay the test fees directly to Trafikverket, and they are not included in our prices. The same goes for the photo and making the licence card.

How long it takes

There is no exact answer. It depends on how much you practise privately, how often you can book lessons and how quickly you learn the theory. A realistic plan is often three to six months from the first lesson to the driving test.
